Thoughts: Full ChatGPT and Codex resets shouldn’t postpone your weekly reset

A small product question: if you use a full reset near the end of your weekly cycle, should it also push back the date of your next automatic reset?

Just a passing thought from something that happened to me recently.

I had only a few days left before my normal weekly allowance renewed. I needed to finish some urgent work, so I used one of my full resets. It restored my allowance immediately, which was exactly what I needed.

But in my account, activating it also restarted the entire seven-day window. I used the refreshed allowance in about a day and a half. Instead of waiting roughly two more days for my normal weekly reset, I was suddenly waiting almost six.

This is not about when the resets are granted. That timing can keep users guessing. The question is what should happen once you receive and activate one.

Should the weekly reset move too?

There are two ways it could work:

  • The full reset restores the allowance and leaves the existing weekly reset date alone.
  • The full reset restores the allowance and starts a completely new seven-day cycle.

I think the first option makes more sense. Otherwise, a banked reset can be least valuable when you need it near the end of a cycle. It effectively replaces an imminent weekly reset instead of sitting alongside it as an additional benefit.

It is a small product detail, but it changes how useful the benefit feels. A reset sounds like extra capacity. If using it also postpones the normal weekly refresh, some of that extra value is quietly lost through timing.

There may be operational reasons for doing it this way. From a user’s point of view, though, preserving the existing weekly reset date would feel clearer and fairer.

That is all. Not a grand thesis, just one of those product details that seems minor until it catches you at exactly the wrong time.

This reflects my experience with a ChatGPT Pro 5x account on 25 September 2026. Product behaviour can change.
